Visit to The Patrick Geddes Centre at Riddle's Court, Lawnmarket
Thursday 19 October 2017

A special visit has been organised to celebrate the recent opening of The Patrick Geddes Centre at Riddle’s Court in the Lawnmarket.  Many of you who visited Riddle’s Court in November 2011 will recall the extensive renovation project envisaged by the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust which after many years in the planning is now complete with superb results.  One of Edinburgh’s oldest houses dating back over four centuries with outstanding examples of interior decorations, Riddle’s Court has now been restored to the very highest standard.   The building will bear the name of Sir Patrick Geddes (1854-1932) who at one time lived at Riddle’s Court before building his own house at Ramsay Gardens.  Known as “The Father of Town Planning” as well as a biologist, sociologist, geographer and philanthropist, this new education centre will endeavour to further his ideal “Vivendo Dicsimus – By Living We Learn”.

Professor David Purdie, Hon. Fellow, Institute for Advanced Study, University of Edinburgh, has very kindly agreed to open the proceedings with a talk on the history behind Riddle’s Court to be followed by a reception with light refreshments and an opportunity to view the building with its many important decorative features.
