The Journey to Looking Good
Tuesday 05 September 2017

Lecture by Ola Wojtkiewicz in the Hawthornden Lecture Theatre, Scottish National Gallery.

Art Historian, Ola Wojtkiewicz, co-curator of Looking Good, Male Gaze from Van Dyck to Lucian Freud at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery will share her insights into curating this topical exhibition which tracks the evolution of male appearance, fashion and personal grooming in the visual arts.  From fascinating research ranging from historic dress to gender studies, through the intricacies of exhibition and design and interpretation; Ola will reveal the complexities of contemporary curating as well as some ‘behind the scenes’ anecdotes.  The lecture will include a consideration of a few key works of art from both the SNPG and the National Portrait Gallery in London.  Richly illustrated and informal, this event seeks to enthuse and intrigue the audience through its unique insight into one of the most thought-provoking exhibitions on display in Edinburgh in 2017 which is part of the national tour of Sir Anthony Van Dyck’s final self portrait recently saved for the nation. The SNPG is the only Scottish gallery to host this high profile painting.

Wine and soft drinks will be served in the IT Gallery before the lecture between 6.00 and 6.25pm.  Following the lecture from Ola there will be a short talk from Dr Patricia Allerston, Deputy Director of the SNG and Project Director of the Scottish National Gallery Project.  PLEASE NOTE: This will be of particular interest as we will learn about the very latest up to date details from Patricia on the renovation plans which, as announced, have recently been altered.
